The age old issue of vagrancy on Chapel St. It seems to be on the rise recently. There are people sleeping in front of store fronts and making a mess. Not be heartless but the city can do better. Mental health social workers? What can be done?
Stay on-site and call the non-emergency NHPD number and tell them that there is an issue for the COMPASS Teams. They've been doing a great job of getting people the help they need.
Thanks XYZ. That's very good advice. Be careful. Many folks who are homeless have mental health or addiction problems and are unpredictable. A guy demanded that I ride his dead wheelchair across the street and plug it in. After a brief exchange, I started to call someone and he got in it and chased me, yelling that I had stolen his ATM card. I talked to a local pastor later who said "yeah, he does that,"
During the Pilot Program, NHPD is going out and assessing situations . The responding officer determines whether it's a call for COMPASS They come out and have a remarkable, stunning record of success at getting people the help they need.
Thanks again XYZ. What I recommend to folks who do not have experience with this is maintaining a safe distance and keeping an eye on the person in crisis. (I believe that being forced to sleep outside is itself a crisis or a crisis waiting to happen as winter approaches).
NHPD wants to fight crime and is committed to making this program work. They will take over when they arrive and the original poster can go on their way knowing that they helped, not just the individual in crisps, but many more.
What’s the data on downtown crime committed by unhoused people again? Rather than spreading FUD about people in circumstances that might make any of us do things we would later regret, as some SeeClickFix accounts relish doing, SeeClickFix users should give constructive advice on how to help people. After all, helping people would cut down on this violence that worries you so much.
The issue isn't crime. A high percentage of people who are chronically homeless have mental-health and/or addiction problems. It's why they're homeless. They can be unpredictable. Addictions defend themselves and will sometimes violently oppose offers of help.
